What is sick care?

Sick care involves the diagnosis and treatment of acute illnesses, such as the common cold or flu. Unlike chronic diseases requiring ongoing care, acute illnesses need immediate treatment. Most acute conditions usually cause short-term symptoms, such as a dry cough or fever, but responsive treatment is crucial to prevent complications.

Which illnesses can sick care address?

As a primary care specialist, Dr. Favuzza can diagnose and treat a wide range of acute illnesses, such as:

Strep throat

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes pain and irritation in your throat. If you have the infection, you may also have small white spots filled with pus in the back of your throat.

Cold and flu

The common cold and influenza (flu) share many similarities. Both illnesses can cause coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and fever. While the common cold typically resolves itself with rest and fluids, the flu can cause more serious symptoms and often requires additional treatment.

Bronchitis

Bronchitis occurs when the bronchial tubes in the lungs inflame and fill with mucus. Early treatment can stop the infection from worsening and impairing your breathing.

Digestive problems

Digestive illnesses like stomach flu, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea may benefit from intravenous (IV) fluids, oral medications, or lifestyle changes.

At Hometown Health Care of NEPA, Dr. Favuzza also treats minor fractures, cuts, insect bites, and other common injuries, so you don’t have to seek treatment at the emergency room or urgent care.

What does sick care include?

If you’re feeling unwell, Dr. Favuzza will schedule you for the first available appointment. When you arrive, she records your height and weight and checks your vitals (temperature, blood pressure, respiration rate). Next, she asks about your symptoms. She may ask how long they’ve lasted and if you’ve experienced relief from any at-home treatments.

Dr. Favuzza may also order tests, such as blood work, strep tests, and imaging scans, to gather more information about your illness. After running any necessary tests, she may recommend:

  • Rest and fluids
  • Over-the-counter (OTC) medications
  • Prescription medications
  • Antibiotics

Dr. Favuzza can also coordinate specialist visits if she believes you need additional testing or health screenings.
